Thabitha Magoma is an auto electrician based at our Roseville depot in Tshwane. She shares her thoughts on issues affecting young people this Youth Month.
“We as young people in South Africa are facing many difficulties but we also have great opportunities to help change the future of the country and the corporate world. We make up the largest part of the population, which means we have the power to shape the economy, politics, technology and society. However, for this to happen, we must be willing to work hard, develop skills, and become active citizens.
One of the biggest challenges facing young South Africans is unemployment. Many companies require experience, which makes it difficult for first-time job seekers to enter the workplace. Another challenge is the gap between education and the skills needed in the modern economy. Despite these challenges, there are many opportunities available to the youth. For example, to they can become entrepreneurs instead of depending only on formal employment. Through social media, online businesses, and innovation, many young South Africans are starting small businesses and creating jobs for others. The internet has made it easier to learn new skills, market products and connect with customers across the world.
To change the trajectory of the country and corporate South Africa, young people need to take responsibility for their future and that includes
focusing on education and skills development, innovation, communication, leadership, financial literacy and entrepreneurship. They need to participate actively in society by voting, fighting corruption and holding leaders accountable. Ethical leadership and honesty are necessary if South Africa is to build a better future.
Corporate South Africa also needs young people who are disciplined, creative, adaptable and hardworking. Companies want employees who can solve problems, work in teams and use technology effectively. Young people should therefore take internships, learnerships and networking opportunities seriously because these help to build confidence and work readiness.
In conclusion, the youth of South Africa face serious challenges, especially unemployment and inequality. However, there are also many opportunities. If young people become determined, skilled and active in building their communities, they can change the future of both the country and the corporate sector. The future of South Africa depends greatly on the choices and actions of its youth today.”
